Priorities in implementing the Charter of Fundamental Rights discussed with EU Commissioner Viviane Reding

Monday, November 22, Vilnius - President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Viviane Reding, European Commission's Vice-President responsible for justice, fundamental rights, EU citizenship and gender equality.

The President and the Commissioner discussed issues of the day related to EU policies, international migration, and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

The President expressed support to priorities defined by the European Commission in the area of justice and fundamental rights. She underlined that human rights and fundamental freedoms were the foundation of the European Union and that the Charter of Fundamental Rights must therefore be respected in adopting and implementing all policies of the EU. According to the President, there should be zero tolerance to any kind of violations of the Charter if the EU is to serve interests of its citizens in the best possible way.

With the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty in the European Union last December, the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights became legally binding.

The Commissioner is visiting Vilnius to participate in the seminar "Joining efforts towards Gender Equality in the EU 2010 - 2015" organized by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE).
