Tomorrow, October 26, President Dalia Grybauskaitė will attend the informal meeting of the European Council members who will discuss concrete measures to control the euro zone's debt crisis and to ensure the stability of the EU finance and banking sector. Dalia Grybauskaitė offered condolences to President Abdullah Gül of the Republic of Turkey over the devastating earthquake that had struck his country. "In this hour of immense grief, I wish you, the victims' families and the people of Turkey fortitude, determination and togetherness," the President wrote in her message of condolences. The heads of state or government of the European Union countries, gathered in the capital of Belgium, discussed the EU economy revival and finance stabilization measures and debated how to solve the issues relevant for the euro zone. According to the President, the European Union has all the necessary measures to cope with the existing economic hardships – the member states should only find the political will to implement such measures. President Dalia Grybauskaitė, currently attending the European Council meeting, discussed with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk the bilateral relations of Lithuania and Poland – incumbent holder of the EU presidency. The President extended congratulations to Donald Tusk on the victory of his party Civic Platform in the elections to the Polish parliament. Dalia Grybauskaitė and Donald Tusk agreed that further good neighborly relations based on mutual understanding and partnership was a common goal of both countries. President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to President Pál Schmitt of the Republic of Hungary on the 55th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution. "It was exactly 55 years ago that the Hungarian people stood up in a brave but unequal struggle for their country's freedom and independence. Their fight stands as a twentieth century symbol representing the cause of liberty and democracy as well as a source of inspiration for other nations living in totalitarian oppression," the President wrote in her message of congratulations. President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Prime Minister Vladimir Filat of Moldova. The President underlined that Moldova had made great progress in terms of euro-integration, but protracted internal conflicts in the recent years were hindering the implementation of structural reforms significant for the people and economy of the country. President Dalia Grybauskaitė opened the annual ceremony of the Swedish Business Awards for outstanding Lithuanian and Swedish business achievements of the year. Extending her congratulations for the long-standing initiative of the Swedish Trade Council and Lithuania the President underlined that innovative and socially responsible business was a guarantee of the successful development of Lithuania and the Baltic Sea region as well as of the wellbeing of their people. President Dalia Grybauskaitė accepted letters of credence from Ghana’s Ambassador Paul King Aryene. Dalia Grybauskaitė and Paul King Aryene discussed the cooperation in the United Nations and the perspectives to enhance bilateral economic relations. The President expressed delight at the increasing interest of Lithuanian and Ghanaian businessmen in the development of business relations between the two countries. President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations on behalf of the Lithuanian people and on her own behalf to His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain on the occasion of the National Day of Spain. |
