The President underlined at the meeting that the decision taken by the U.S. Federal Government to ship cargo by transit through Lithuania’s territory for the international mission in Afghanistan gave strength to Lithuanian-US partnership on security. The idealism of the then Lithuanian diplomats in Washington, Rome, or Vatican, and their faith in the success of their efforts to reconstitute the historical truth have not been in vain,” the President said. The President and the Commissioner discussed issues of the day related to EU policies, international migration, and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Speaking about the NATO summit in Lisbon, President Dalia Grybauskaitė said that all Lithuania’s requirements had been taken into account, including security guarantees for the Baltic States and the Alliance’s future relationship with Russia. “Article Five has finally become applicable in real terms for the Baltic States. We have everything we requested for at the summit meeting. We have security guarantees for Lithuania and an open door policy for NATO, which means that all democratic countries will be able to join if they conform to the set requirements. The Alliance has confirmed its transformation into an organization ready to meet all the challenges of the 21st century, such as cyber attacks, energy security threats and other,” Dalia Grybauskaitė said. At their summit meeting in Lisbon, NATO leaders unanimously adopted a new Strategic Concept for the Alliance. President Dalia Grybauskaitė says the new Strategic Concept will give a “new face” to the Alliance, making it more effective, stronger and better prepared to counter modern challenges. President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė welcomed the decision taken by the U.S. Government to transport shipments for the international mission in Afghanistan by transit via the Klaipėda Seaport. “This is another sign that the dialogue between Lithuania and the United States is becoming closer and that mutually beneficial practical cooperation is delivering more tangible results. Freight transit from the United States will bring economic benefit to our country, and cooperation in this area will enhance Lithuania’s contribution to international security,” President Dalia Grybauskaitė said. President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė had a meeting with the President of the European Economic and Social Committee, Staffan Nilsson. Issues discussed in the meeting included the EU 2020 Strategy, Lithuania’s National EU2020 Reform Programme, the EU budget and the new financial perspective, and other EU issues of importance. President Dalia Grybauskaitė positively assessed the European Commission’s decision to include the integration of the Baltic Energy Market into the European market in the map of EU priorities. According to the President, the implementation of such projects will ensure energy supply to Lithuania from alternative sources. It will also contribute to creating energy independence for the Baltic States and strengthen energy security across the region. President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė congratulated President Valdis Zatlers of the Republic of Latvia and all Latvian people on Latvia’s national holiday, the Independence Day. |
