President Dalia Grybauskaitė opened the traditional annual convention of heads of Lithuanian diplomatic representations today morning at the Presidential Palace. The President and diplomats discussed foreign policy achievements and priority objectives. “In the European dimension, we have the objective of preparing for the upcoming negotiations on the new EU financial perspective and ensuring Lithuania’s economic and energy security. National defense and energy security are also the objectives of our membership in NATO. Strengthening bilateral relations and ensuring a secure neighborhood is a key commitment for Lithuanian diplomats,” the President said. President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Latvian President Andris Bērziņš who arrived in Lithuania on an official visit. It was the first meeting between the President of Lithuania and the new President of Latvia. “Latvia is our closest neighbor. Our positions coincide in addressing key regional problems. Good-neighborly relations will ensure successful cooperation on energy, economy and security issues,” the President said. President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Prosecutor General Darius Valys, Vice Foreign Minister Asta Skaisgirytė-Liauškienė, Director of the International Law Department at the Ministry of Justice Aušra Bernotienė, and other representatives of these institutions to discuss the situation brought about by Austria’s move to release Mikhail Golovatov, a suspect in the January 13 case. President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with European Commission’s Vice President Siim Kallas responsible for Transport. At their meeting, the President underlined that a well-developed European transport network was an essential prerequisite to real and successful European integration. Therefore, transport interconnection between the Baltic States and Europe was one of Lithuania’s top targets, with Rail Baltica and Via Baltica included in the list of priority projects. President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to President Nicolas Sarkozy of France on Bastille Day. "I would like to express my belief that the storming of the Bastille, which signaled the creation of the modern French nation and state more than two hundred years ago, would also give inspiration and strength today to building a safe and secure future of France and Europe as a whole," the President wrote in her congratulatory letter. President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Rosslyn Noonan, Chairperson of the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (ICC). During their meeting, the President and the ICC Chair discussed Lithuania's focus on human rights and freedoms, a priority issue on its OSCE chairmanship agenda, as well as the situation with respect to human rights in Lithuania and other countries. President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with the President of Parliament and Acting President of Moldova, Marian Lupu, and Prime Minister Vlad Filat to discuss bilateral relations, cooperation between Moldova and the European Union, Moldova’s progress in implementing fundamental domestic structural reforms, and possible ways of resolving the protracted conflict in Transnistria.
