The European Summit, attended, among other heads of state, by President Dalia Grybauskaitė, agreed to the European Stability Mechanism, approved the European Commission’s guidelines to the EU Member States, decided on support to Greece and discussed migration regulatory measures in the Schengen Area. According to the President of Lithuania, the guidelines from the European Commission to Lithuania approved by the European Council are valuable but they should be seen only as an orientation of which way to go, leaving it to the country to decide which means and measures it should employ to stabilize its economy.

The European Union leaders have gathered for two days in the Belgium capital to discuss European economic and financial policy coordination mechanisms, support to Greece, migration, and the EU’s Southern Neighborhood issues, as well as to assess Croatia’s progress in the negotiations for membership in the European Union.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with German President Christian Wulf. This was the first bilateral meeting of the Lithuanian President with the new German President elected last summer. The Presidents discussed energy security, bilateral cooperation and EU financial policy issues. According to the President of Lithuania who is visiting Germany at the invitation of President Christian Wulf, Germany understands Lithuania’s aspirations towards energy independence and security and German support has been greatly valuable in seeking that the EU leaders adopt decisions important for the Baltic states, i.e. to create, by 2015, a single European energy market and eliminate energy islands.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė, currently on a working visit in Tartu, and Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves visited the University of Tartu, well known for its long academic and student corporation traditions. The two presidents offered their congratulations to the graduates of the faculties of law and economics who were presented with diplomas today.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves in Tartu to discuss issues of topical concern for Lithuania and Estonia: energy and cyber security as well as ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the region, the European Union and NATO. “The successful development of the Baltic States and regional economic growth is possible only by ensuring energy and cyber security; therefore, we have to be adequately prepared to respond to new threats,” the President said during the meeting.
 
President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė sent congratulations to President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson of the Republic of Iceland on Iceland’s national holiday, the Independence Day.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė will travel to Tartu tomorrow, June 17, where she will meet with Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and visit the University of Tartu. During their meeting, the two presidents will discuss topical bilateral issues and ways to strengthen cooperation in the European Union, NATO and the region. Special focus will be placed on cyber and energy security, collaboration between the Nordic and Baltic countries as well as the upcoming negotiations on the EU's new financial perspective.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė received letters of credence from Ambassador Joon Jae Lee of the Republic of Korea. As she welcomed the newly appointed ambassador, the President accentuated the need to develop more dynamic cooperation ties between Lithuania and South Korea. According to the President, people in Lithuania did not have extensive knowledge about South Korea; it was therefore important to strengthen bilateral contacts, especially in cultural and economic areas.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė presented letters of credence to Lithuanian Ambassador to Finland Arūnas Jievaltas. During their meeting, the President underlined the need to strengthen Lithuanian-Finnish relations in all areas without exception. "In the past several years, the relationship between Lithuania and Finland has become closer, and the situation is therefore favorable for the further development of both political dialogue and business ties," the President said.
 
President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations on behalf of herself and the people of Lithuania to President Dmitry Medvedev of the Russian Federation on the occasion of Russia Day.
