President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with foreign ambassadors resident in and accredited to Lithuania, to discuss the domestic and foreign policy of Lithuania. This traditional meeting is already the third such meeting during the President’s term of office. President Dalia Grybauskaitė presented letters of credence to the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to the Russian Federation, Renatas Norkus. According to the President, Russia's role is significant both regionally and globally and, therefore, the new ambassador will have very responsible duties representing Lithuania in this country. President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to Queen Margrethe II of Denmark on the 40th anniversary of her reign. On the occasion of the Day of Freedom Defenders, President Dalia Grybauskaitė awarded Commemorative Medals of 13th January to Lithuanians who in January-September 1991 actively defended Lithuania's freedom and independence, safeguarded peace and health of the people. President Dalia Grybauskaitė attended at St. Vitus Cathedral the State Funeral of the fighter for freedom and former President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel. According to the President, Vaclav Havel was a great European figure whose courage, moral values and idealism have changed Europe. His "Velvet Revolution" inspired the Lithuanian people and other nations to strive for freedom in a peaceful way. President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with the Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania, Archbishop Luigi Bonazzi. Dalia Grybauskaitė and the Apostolic Nuncio discussed the bilateral relations between Lithuania and Vatican, urgent international issues, the prospects of Lithuanian economy, and the possibilities for reducing social exclusion. President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended condolences to President Benigno S. Aquino III of the Republic of the Philippines over the devastating consequences caused by Tropical Storm Washi which resulted in the loss of hundreds of innocent lives and left thousands of people homeless.
