Press ReleasesGaudeamus – expression of Baltic unitySunday, June 26, Vilnius - President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė congratulated participants and spectators of the final concert of Gaudeamus, the Baltic Student Song and Dance Festival.
Addressing the audience, the President underlined the Festival that was launched 55 years ago was a celebration of unity and freedom of Baltic students and a wake-up call for Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian nations for all those years. In 1988, already before independence was reestablished, participants of the Gaudeamus Festival raised the national flags of the Baltic states.
"The students are always in the vanguard, they are always in the foreground. They ignite fire in our hearts and minds. The songs resounding in Vilnius these days have created a genuine celebration for the whole of Lithuania. Not only for you, not only for the young, but also for the elderly who can rejoice in their beautiful offspring and sing together with all," the President said.
The President wished that songs and dances continued uniting people, giving joy and inspiring for change.
The President is a patron of the Gaudeamus Festival.
