"Our Presidential Council will remain and we will continue the endeavours already started by leaders of our countries," President Dalia Grybauskaitė said. "Lithuania and Poland have the same interests within the European Union, and I am ready to cooperate to the benefit of both countries. Lithuania is prepared to tackle the issues of concern to both countries, including those of concern to ethnic minorities. Respecting its all citizens no matter which ethnic minority they belong to, Lithuania seeks to settle their concerns as soon as possible."
In the meeting with her Polish counterpart, President Grybauskaitė underlined Lithuania's political commitment to remain a nuclear power state and to build a new nuclear power plant here, and invited Poland to contribute, as a partner, to the construction of the plant.
The two Presidents confirmed they would concert their actions also in their relations with Eastern neighbours.
"I am confident we will concert our actions in all fields, especially in the face of protectionist measures directed against our countries. No less important is our cooperation in European matters, particularly in the light of the approaching Lithuanian presidency of OSCE and Polish presidency of the EU in 2011, " President Grybauskaitė said.
Concerning bilateral economic relations, Lithuanian President and Polish Prime Minister agreed on the need to tackle energy security problems and address the issue of opening electricity markets together. The parties of the meeting exchanged views on the prospects of the new nuclear power plant in Lithuania and the construction of electricity bridge to Poland.
The discussion also included the issue of problems faced by ethnic minorities in both countries and their possible solutions.
Lithuanian President also visited the Warsaw Uprising Museum to pay honour to the memory of those killed in the fight for Poland's freedom. Press Service of the President |
